Using Server Virtualization to Provision a Future-Proof Network.
Challenge
A long-term care facility in Rockville, Maryland, approached Dataprise to provide a reliable and secure wireless network. The facility was preparing to eliminate paper-based patient records and transition all records to an electronic filing and patient management system (electronic medical records, or EMR).
As you can imagine this was a massive project. One of the major tasks was coming up with a strategy to provision each healthcare employee with a tablet device to wirelessly access patient records from any location within the complex.
The Records Management and CIO of the facility engaged Dataprise to design and implement a wireless wide-area network (WAN) to provide secure access to the new EMR system from anywhere in the 4-building complex. In addition, there could be no dead spots in wireless reception. We fully understood the importance of maintaining compliance with patient privacy regulations, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
It’s also worth adding that they had consulted other IT firms prior to hearing about Dataprise, and were advised that a 100% solution would not be possible based upon their requirements.
Solution
Our Datacom consultants conducted a comprehensive wireless survey of the complex to determine the optimal wireless network configuration. Once the survey was completed, we provided the client with a detailed report of our findings, and our recommended Wireless Access Point deployment scheme. Upon approval from facility management, our Datacom consultants installed, configured, tested and verified the functionality of the new Wireless WAN across the entire complex.
Our client was able to complete their paperless record migration, and their healthcare providers benefited from rapid access to patient data. Doctors and other healthcare professionals were able to access patient histories and patient data in real-time through the secure network, enabling rapid diagnosis and improved patient care – all while maintaining patient privacy and HIPAA compliance.
