Challenge
We were contacted by an IT Manager from an association of medical professionals that relied heavily on web-based applications to deliver extremely critical information to its members. He explained that as the organization grew, the demands of its member services applications out-paced its network capabilities. Member services suffered and client satisfaction dropped. It’s fair to say that he was under a lot of pressure to deliver a resolution for his situation.
The IT Manager had heard about Dataprise through one of our existing customers and decided to bring us in. When the association contacted Dataprise, its member services’ web applications were going through a mission-critical software upgrade and website redesign. What they were really in need of was a powerful, scalable and flexible solution for upgrading their network infrastructure in order to support the new applications and accommodate their growing membership.
Solution
After an initial meeting, Dataprise introduced the concept of virtualization – a server technology that not only met the association’s network requirements, but also provided a scalable infrastructure that would accommodate growing IT needs for years to come. Virtualization is a proven technology that enables multiple virtual machines (VMs) to be hosted on a single physical host server. Each VM functions exactly as a standalone physical server, and draws processing power and memory from the physical host, enabling organizations to dynamically add and remove servers or change server specifications without having to invest in new hardware.
Over the course of 2 weeks we conducted a thorough Information Technology Assessment (ITA), which enabled us to quickly capture an in-depth snapshot of their entire network infrastructure, such as; network design – systems and Internet connectivity; network security – firewalls, physical and wireless security; server infrastructure – hardware, operating systems and storage; software applications – communication, collaboration and financial management, plus a whole lot more.
After compiling and presenting our assessment results to the IT Manager, and then later the association board, we were retained to begin working on implementing some of our suggested strategies – the first being to bring their server situation ‘under control’ (nicknamed ‘Phase 1’). Phase 1 was a major consolidation project using the power and scalability of server virtualization, and turned out to be a huge success with the customer.
What’s happening today?
Our strategy of implementing flexibility and scalability through a modern virtual network empowered our customer to continually modify their network and servers to meet changing organizational needs. In addition to benefiting from server virtualization, the association has already, and will continue to save thousands of dollars on hardware costs over the next five years. In addition, virtualization all but eliminates network downtime, improving employee productivity and their member services’ experience.
Dataprise met and exceeded the association’s expectations so much so, that we have since completed a multitude of other projects and tasks, either in a hands-on or strictly consultative capacity.
