Challenge

The U.S. Department of State selected Dataprise to design and build a secure, reliable on-site network to support more than 200 US delegates at the Group of Eight Summit (G8 Summit), to be hosted by President George W. Bush at Sea Island, Georgia in 2004. 

The State Department first engaged Dataprise in November, 2003 – just six months prior to the start of the Summit – to create multiple secure wide-area network connections between the State Department’s primary administrative offices in Washington, DC, the site of the meeting in Sea Island, Georgia, and the media headquarters in Savannah, Georgia. Hundreds of PCs, laptops and Blackberry phones had to be deployed and networked with secure wireless technology to support the staff working on this event.. 

Solution

We deployed a team of skilled network consultants to each location – providing local support in Washington, DC, as well as on-site support in both Georgia locations.  Our team configured Active Directory domain controllers, file servers, Exchange and BlackBerry e-mail servers to support all of the staff working on the Summit. In addition, the Dataprise Data Communications team configured secure private connections between each of the main sites, as well as several remote locations.


Ongoing tasks before and during the summit included:

• Designing, testing and supporting the wireless network for Tablet PC devices that each Head of State’s aide(s) would use during the meetings to provide the Head of State with critical information
• Maintaining servers and PCs at all locations
• Troubleshooting user issues relating to logins, printing and applications
• Assisting press from around the world with computer or network problems at the Media Center in Savannah, Georgia
• Managing the complete inventory of servers, PCs and network technology
• Securely transporting all technology back to the State Department’s office in Washington, DC
