Dataprise Applauds Maryland Legislature for Repealing “Tech Tax” — Company Anticipates Continuation of Technology-Friendly Policies

Dataprise, Inc., a Rockville-based information technology company, today thanked and congratulated the Maryland General Assembly for this weekend’s repeal of the “tech tax” that had threatened Maryland’s technology services sector.

Having carved out a niche by creating and developing solutions such as its Signature^® Network Support Plans for small- and medium-size businesses (SMBs) Dataprise stood as a symbol of the kind of company the tech tax would have jeopardized. Many SMBs would have been unable to take on the additional fees, leaving them without the information technology services they need, and Dataprise without the resources to continue moving forward with new innovations. 

Passed in last year’s legislative special session and scheduled to take effect July 1, the 6 percent computer services tax would have had a tremendous impact on the state’s technology sector. Had the tax not been repealed, many small- and medium-size information technology companies may have been faced with leaving the state or going out of business. 

“For more than a decade, Maryland has recognized the necessity of a flourishing technology sector in today’s information-based economy,” Dataprise President and CEO David Eisner said. “By repealing the tech tax, Maryland’s leaders send a strong signal that they will maintain the pro-business policies that have helped our industry grow and have kept the best creative and entrepreneurial minds in state.”

Eisner played a key role in getting the tax repealed. He met personally with Maryland Senate President Thomas V. “Mike” Miller on Feb. 27 to discuss the issue and provided testimony before the House Ways & Means and Senate Budget & Taxation committees at their March 12 hearings. 

With the tech tax off the table, Eisner expects the state’s historically technology-friendly policies to continue.

“Disaster has been averted and Maryland will maintain its role as a technology leader,” Eisner said. “I applaud Maryland’s lawmakers for recognizing the tax’s far-reaching negative business consequences and having the courage to do the right thing.”
